Plastic and fabric are the most common materials used for under-bed storage containers. “When you have your measurements, there are masses of options out there, but I’d normally choose a fabric option over plastic, to give you a bit more flexibility, plus more room for error if the space is a bit tight,” says Price. “However, if you’re storing something really heavy, plastic will stand up to being pushed in and out better, and there are options with wheels which will help you to move it more easily.” A woven material may be an enticing option, though, for those who want more decorative storage.

Weight Capacity of Under-Bed Storage Containers

Weight capacity is generally less of a concern in terms of the bins’ contents and more about how easy it is for you to move the bins around. “You should always keep in mind that eventually you will have to remove the items from underneath the bed,” notes Price. “We recommend to not over-store and keep it light. It can be difficult to remove the storage from underneath the bed if the items are too heavy.” That being said, the weight capacity on most of these that list it is fairly low, so you should make sure you aren’t storing anything too heavy—stick to bedsheets, not books.

Goforth suggests moving a storage box closer to the middle of the floor under your bed as another way to forgo bed skirts.

“If you want to disguise the storage, choose something smaller than your bed, so it tucks well inside the boundaries of the frame,” recommends Price. “Also choose something in the same colour as your bed or flooring, so it blends in more. There are clear options available, so you can see what you have stored, but to reduce the visual clutter, we favor an opaque option which you can label, so you know what is stored where.”

Another thing to consider when shopping for the best under-bed storage is whether you need your items to be pest-proof. “When considering under-bed storage—the most important feature is to make sure it’s air tight,” points out Ludwiczak. “Doing this one simple thing will ensure that if you ever have to go through the experience of getting bed bugs then at least the items stored under your bed are protected. The air tight feature will not only help with bed bugs but also protect your belongings against dust mites, carpet beetles, and other unwanted pests that lurk around your bed.”

“Under-bed space keeps items contained and out of sight and serves as a physical boundary to curtail the number of items coming into the space. It’s also convenient because it keeps less-used items out of prime storage space.”

If you’re worried about negative energy in your room, you might want to avoid storing nostalgia like papers, photos, souvenirs, or old clothing under the bed. According to Feng Shui teachings, these items can carry emotional energy and interfere with sleep.

According to Vastu Shastra, the mirror should never be kept at the head or under the bed. By doing this, there is a rift in the relationship between husband and wife. In the house where a broom is kept under the bed, there is often conflict between husband and wife.

To achieve balance, your head should point southward while you sleep, in line with the Earth’s electromagnetic pull. Ideally, your entire bedroom would be oriented south as well. Some research has shown that those who sleep in the north-south position also take longer.

Positioning your bed in line with the door is the worst possible position, according to the principles of Feng shui. People who practice Feng shui call it the ‘dead man’s position’ or the ‘coffin position’ because the feet or head face the door and resemble how we carry the dead through open doors from the house.

There is also evidence to suggest that sleeping with our legs raised can be as beneficial as lifting our heads. Gravity affects our feet and ankles in a similar way to our brains. During the day, fluid is drawn to our lower extremities by the pull of gravity and this is stops at night when we lie flat.

For best results in neutralizing urine odors in your mattress, spread a thin layer of baking soda out over the entire mattress surface. If a specific area smells more strongly, you can use a slightly thicker layer of baking soda. Allow the baking soda to sit, uncovered, for 5 to 10+ hours, and then vacuum it.

Small mattress overlay pads are often the best solution for cutting down on laundry while still absorbing urine and protecting the mattress and bed linens. Overlay pads, or underpads, are great for frequent accidents because they go over the fitted sheet and are intended to absorb urine before it reaches the mattress.

If you’re in really humid locations prone to mold growth, you’ll want to install a moisture barrier between your mattress and platform. These allow air to circulate under the mattress; thus not allowing mold to find it’s way to even start growing.

There are numerous places to hide valuables, said Dustin Fox, realtor and owner of Fox Homes. “Some common places for hiding valuables are behind wallpaper, inside couch and chair cushions, or behind loose bricks around fireplaces. People also like to hide valuables under steps, siding, and shingles.”

Lay on your bed like you typically would at night, if your toes point towards a door, you have to move your bed’s placement immediately. Feng Shui experts explain that your bed facing a door (be it the main bedroom door or a balcony door) is bad luck because the door will “pull” your energy away from you as you sleep.
